Making Mushroom Spawn - How to Make Your Own Mushroom Spawn

  • One of the nicest things about growing mushrooms is that once you start, you can keep growing them for years and years without having to buy any more mushroom spawn. It is really easy to make your own spawn and keep it in the fridge for many weeks.

    Mushroom spawn

Mushroom spawn is just food that has mycelium growing through it. The diet is commonly some form of bird seed, such as corn or rye grain, since the mycelium likes to grow through it and because the shape and tiny size of the grain gives numerous inoculation places (it has a large surface area which means you have more chance of the mycelium "leaping off" and growing through your substrate).

How to Make a Mushroom Spawning

When you know precisely how to do it and are aware of the potential complications caused by contaminations, creating your own mushroom spawn may be a pretty simple operation (which is why it is very important to have good sterile procedures). To create your own spawn, you must first collect your own mushroom spores.

To make a spore print, place a mushroom on a piece of foil. Next, you add a few milliliters of distilled water to this print and mix the solution with an inoculation loop (small piece of wire with a metal curve in one end). This will combine the spores with water. Next, take a syringe and suck up this solution. As previously stated, it is critical that the syringe and any other equipment be clean.

This spore syringe may be stored in a cold area, such as the refrigerator, until ready to use. Next, obtain a big jar and fill it halfway with the selected grain (such as Rye grain). Cover the cover with Tyvek and secure with a metal lid. Drill four little holes towards the corners of the lid to use as inoculation sites later.

When you're ready, use the spore syringe to inject a few milliliters of your solution into the four holes in the jar's cover. Typically, one syringe may inoculate around 5 jars. Spot the jars in a warm place when finished, and after around 4 weeks, your contents will have colonized and mushrooms will begin to develop!

You might also utilize this colonized container of grain as spawn - the option is yours. You may even double the spawn to make as many as 25 jars! This is easy accomplished by obtaining more grain jars and combining a portion of the colonized spawn container with the others. If done correctly, one jar may become ten!

F+ spore syringe - Is it better?

The F+ spore syringe is a revolutionary tool for growing mushrooms. It is an inoculation syringe that has spores of the mycelium in liquid form. This makes it easier to inject into the substrate to grow mushrooms.

There are many benefits of using the F+ spore syringe that make it better than other methods of growing mushrooms. The first one is that you can use them on any type of substrate and the second one is that you can use them for any type of mushroom, not just those with a wide cap or gills like oysters, shiitake, reishi, lion’s mane and more.
