TORONTO Jack Lambert Jersey , Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese filmmakers need to make more serious films that reflect China's reality so as to establish themselves both in the domestic and international markets, said Chinese director Wang Xiaoshuai.

His latest film Chuangru zhe (Red Amnesia), joining the Toronto International Film Festival this week for its North American premiere, is a prime example.

The disturbing and edgy thriller is laid in the ever-evolving contemporary China and depicts the story of Deng, an elderly woman who is shut out by her two sons.

The ghost of her recently deceased husband is her only company. But as she goes about her daily routines, a menacing presence emerges and throws her off.

Underneath all the layers was a story about generational displacement and the impact the Cultural Revolution still has on China till this day.

"Through the heroine, I wanted to bring out people's deepest conscience," Wang explained to Xinhua in an interview.

These types of films don't necessarily fare as well in the domestic market as it does internationally. But Wang said he specifically made it with the domestic audience in mind. His hope is to educate the younger generation with his work.

"The young generation know less and less about history, so we need to do some work with movies. In fact I pay more attention to the domestic audience," he said.

While China is hailed as the world's second biggest movie market in the world, Wang believes there's still a lot of work to be done.

"The whole world is looking at Chinese market, but what we need to do is to try our best to understand it and make it best," he said.

He believed there's a lot of space for Chinese films to grow domestically and the key to gaining international success lies in focusing on China's reality and reflecting people's lives as well as emotions.

"The filmmakers, including directors and producers, can not just eye the box office, they should be responsible to provide more choices for the audience," he said.

Wang's film is one of the 12 films from China that were screened at the 11-day festival in Toronto this year.

NEW YORK, March 21 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks traded mixed Friday, with the S&P 500 touching a fresh record high, as investors continued to cheer Thursday's upbeat economic data from the country and a strong performance in Chinese shares Friday.

In midday trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 97. 61 points, or 0.60 percent, to 16,428.66. The S&P 500 rose 8.81 points, or 0.47 percent, to 1,880.82. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 2.80 points, or 0.06 percent, to 4,316.49.

The broader S&P 500 hit a record intraday high of 1,883.97 points shortly after the opening bell, eclipsing the previous intraday high of 1,883.57 points set on March 7.

The three major indices are on track to finish the week on a strong note.

In absence of major economic data in the day, investors continued to digest generally positive economic data from the world's largest economy the prior day, which helped Wall Street go higher Thursday, shrugging off concerns that interest rate hike may come earlier than expected.

A robust gain in shares of mainland China on Friday also provided a boost to the U.S. market, as China's securities regulator announced regulations for a preferred stock trial. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index jumped 2.7 percent responding to the news.

Moreover, adding to market optimism, Fitch Ratings said Friday in a statement that it has affirmed the U.S. long-term foreign and local currency Issuer Default Ratings at "AAA" with stable outlook.

Fitch said this rating action resolved the "rating watch negative" placed on Oct. 15 last year as U.S. lawmakers were battling over the federal budget and over raising the debt ceiling.

Experience ancient Greece in modern Athens Published: 17.02.2010 | Author: Larry Austin | Category: Destinations

Ancient in the true sense of the word the origins and the rich culture of Athens can be traced back to the era when mythical gods and goddesses ruled the world. Today its fascinating history is portrayed by an array of imposing ancient structures each with its own distinctness. With a culture reflecting this rich history, a visit to Athens is definitely a unique experience, especially for the history buff.

Those arriving in Athens for the first time generally head immediately for the Acropolis. Parched on a steep rock above the sprawling city this symbol of ancient Athens dominates the city鈥檚 skyline.

Foundations laid in 490BC its main construction had taken place in the Golden Age of Pericles during the period 461-429BC. The site of Acropolis includes the Acropolis Museum and four other sacred building all built in the 5th century BC. The monumental entrance, the Propylaea, adorns the site with its Ionic and Doric styles and the
beautifully restored Temple of Athena Nike is on the left of Propylaea. The largest building on the Acropolis, the biggest surviving monument of Doric architecture, entirely made of Pentelic marble, is the awe-inspiring Pathenon 鈥?the backdrop to the magnificent view of Athens from this exotic site.

The remains of ancient Athenian commercial and civic centre, Agora, lies clustered below the Acropolis. The area, where once the great philosophers Socrates and Plato trod, is littered with ruins of numerous ancient buildings such as the Dionysos Theatre, the world’s oldest theatre where great plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides were first performed. The restored building of the 200 BC Stoa of Attalos now contains artifacts portraying 5,000 years of Athenian history.

Southeast of Athens, about an hour’s ride, is Sounion with its famous cape where the foundations of a small Temple of Athena Souniaea and the ruins of the temple of Poseidon are located.
