Dairy Feed Production On A Regional Basis

    Europe holds the largest share of world dairy feed production, with 42.1 million tonnes in 2022. Many countries in the region saw a reduction in their dairy feed tonnage.     North America is second in the world with 28.5 millions tons of milk feed production. North America saw a slight drop in feed tonnage in 2022. The U.S. reported a 0.82% decline in milk production and Canada a 0.70% decrease. The U.S. saw a decrease in milk cows, which slowed feed production. This is due to high feed and building costs.

    With 25.5 million tonnes of milk, Latin America is third in the world for dairy feed production. According to the Alltech report in Peru, there was a double-digit decrease in feed production in 2022 because of a lower number of commercial dairy farmers in the region. Brazil's 2022 dairy feed production fell due to unfavorable conditions that led to poorer pasture conditions and lower consumer demand. Also, the country faced economic challenges such as low disposable income, low milk prices, and lower consumer demand.

    In 2022, the Asia-Pacific region's total milk feed production will be 24.1 million tonnes. Vietnam saw a 16% increase in its feed production. India, China and Japan reported smaller increases in feed production than Thailand, Malaysian, Taiwan, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Mongolia. Due to decreased milk consumption and reduced breeder stock, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Sri Lanka reported decreases in dairy feed production.

    In 2022, the Middle East saw a 7% increase in milk production. The majority of Africa's feed-producing countries saw a drop in dairy feed production or flattening.

    Oceania produced 1.5 million tonnes of dairy feed in 2022. This is nearly 5% less than the previous year. According to the 2023 Alltech Agri-Food Outlook there was a 23.7% increase (0.028 MMT), in New Zealand's milk feed tonnage. The high milk prices encouraged farmers feed more, but this was countered by the high feed prices. The overall decline in dairy production in Australia was around 5%.
