While they look good and dress up a baby's nursery, advocates against them say that crib bumper pads can be deadly and they want the sales banned. This morning at the Capitol, two downstate lawmakers teamed up with advocates from the American Academy of Pediatrics and First Candle, an organization dedicated to eliminating Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, to make the push.
From 1990-2016, there have been 107 fatalities nationwide due to the pads, said Sen. David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester). He and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin (D-Scarsdale) are making the push in the Democrat-controlled Legislature to ban the sale of crib bumper pads in New York state. Ohio and Maryland are the only other states to ban them.
