Realm Royale, originally started life as Paladins: Battlegrounds, a separate mode for Hi-Rez Games’ hero shooter Paladins, first announced in January earlier this year. But development moves at a fast pace at Hi-Rez (the company recently split into three subsidiary studios, all working on different projects) and, less than a year later, Paladins: Battlegrounds had spun off into its own separate title, Realm Royale. A class based, MMO-infused take on the last person standing deathmatch mode, Realm Royale featured rideable mounts, weapon crafting, and an inspired spin on being downed that turned defeated opponents into suicide flag waving chickens.
Although the developer has enjoyed success with its first-person MOBA Paladins, which sits comfortably in the top 25 most played games on Steam, its foray into battle royale has been more trying.Despite being initially well received -- spiking up from 4,500 concurrent players to its six figure peak following a signal boost from popular steamers -- the Steam user review section paints a picture of a polished, but ultimately unbalanced game. It’s a familiar story at this point: Last year, Boss Key’s Lawbreakers failed to find an audience after launching behind PUBG’s massive popularity, and the studio’s attempt to join in on the battle royale trend with Radical Heights proved too little, too late to save Boss Key from shutting its doors. As Fortnite has eclipsed PUBG in popularity, studios jumping into battle royale are finding it difficult to attract and keep players.
But for now, it’s clear that Hi-Rez has its work cut out for it. It needs to figure out some moves to make Realm Royale a key player again. Otherwise, it’s likely to go the way of the dodo, just like Radical Heights did.
