Perhaps you are new to archery and are attempting to learn everything you can. Perhaps, on the other hand, you've been a successful archer for years and are simply reading this because you're addicted and can't get enough. In any case, we all want to be better shooters, and if you don't, I'd say you're not a serious archer/hunter.
There are many factors that contribute to a great archer, but none is more important than having a perfectly balanced bow. The ultimate goal of perfect balance is to be able to draw the bow with your eyes closed, settle in, and open your eyes to a perfectly level bubble. This eliminates the need for human influence or torque to level your bow otherwise. Achieving proper balance will improve your aim in all areas. Better aiming improves every aspect of your shot and can even cure most types of target panic.
To achieve perfect balance, you'll need a front stabiliser bar (at least 10 inches), a V-bar bracket that can be adjusted side to side and up and down, and a rear stabiliser bar that is at least 8 inches. You'll also need a few weights to experiment with.
To begin, attach the stabilisers and level the bow from side to side. I'd suggest 4-5 ounces of weight on the front bar and 10-15 ounces on the back bar. You can adjust the weights from here, but this is a good starting point.
Then, with your eyes closed, draw the bow, anchor with a relaxed grip, and open your eyes. If the bubble on your sight is not level, adjust the rear stabiliser until the process is repeated and your bow is perfectly level from side to side.
Leveling your bow from front to back is a little different because you will add or remove weights rather than adjusting the bars from side to side. Come to full draw and aim for a horizontal line to level your bow front to back. If your pin dips or bounces below the line, add weight to the back bar or remove weight from the front. Do the opposite if your pin bounces above the line. After completing this step, your bow should be very close to being balanced. While you won't be able to aim perfectly still, your aiming pattern should be centred on that horizontal line, not bobbing up and down.
We all want to be the best archers we can be. Properly balancing your bow will be extremely beneficial. Some argue that balancing your bow adds weight, but I'd rather carry a few extra ounces and hit where I aim.
