    The refractive index and Abbe number of the glass are commonly used as degrees of freedom by designers when designing systems. The refractive index_ is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light passing through a given material at a given wavelength, while the Abbe number of a material quantifies the amount of dispersion (exponential change) in a given spectral range. For example, higher refractive indices typically bend light more efficiently, so less curvature is needed in the lens. Lenses with higher refractive indices have less spherical aberration, and light travels faster through materials with lower refractive indices. A high Abbe number generally produces less dispersion and reduces chromatic aberration. In addition, certain glass types have different transmittance wavelength regions.

    The density of the glass helps determine the weight of the optical assembly and, along with the lens diameter, becomes critical for weight-sensitive applications. The coefficient of expansion of the glass also becomes a critical factor when dealing with applications involving extreme temperatures and rapid temperature differences. Optical designers need to keep this in mind when designing optical assemblies.
