Aluminum sulfate is used as a mordant in the dyeing process. Mordant is a substance that helps dyes print on fabric or paper. When mixed with water, aluminum sulfate produces a sludge-like aluminum hydroxide that helps textiles absorb dyes. It also makes the fabric's dye insoluble in water so the fabric doesn't bleed.
