Uses of Industrial Aluminum Sulfate Aluminum sulfate is a commonly used industrial chemical. Compounds of aluminum, sulfur and oxygen are usually dry crystalline, powdery substances that become slimy and non-flammable when wet. This solution, Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3, also known as "alum," has been used since ancient Egyptian times, when it aided in the dyeing process.
Aluminum sulfate is used as a mordant in the dyeing process. Mordant is a substance that helps dyes print on fabric or paper. When mixed with water, aluminum sulfate produces a sludge-like aluminum hydroxide that helps textiles absorb dyes. It also makes the fabric's dye insoluble in water so the fabric doesn't bleed. Although aluminum sulfate has been used in large quantities in this way since 2000 BC, only organic dyes require mordants. Modern synthetic dyes do not.
