Buy Number Plates
Personalized number plates can be one of the biggest investments owners can make in personalizing their cars. They can be very expensive. Personal number plate business is relatively new. Until about 25 years ago, it was only a matter of luck if the number plate had a name, word or phrase written on it, as the number plate was based on the age of a car and the place of its first registration.
However, merchants soon realized that they were having remarkable success selling plates with relatively few characters, or those meant to pronounce names and phrases. In the year 1989, the DVLA realized that serious amount of money can be made in allowing number and designing plate combinations that appealed to the personalized number plate market. Since then, the DVLA has sold over four million individual plates and in the process rose over £2 billion for the Treasury.
Ways to buy number plates (personalized)?
There are three ways to buy number plates (personalized). The first is to buy directly from the DVLA, the second is to use a company or broker, and the third is to buy privately.
Buying from DVLA
Buying personalized number plates directly from the DVLA means eliminating the middleman, i.e. paying at least a lower fee. The DVLA's dedicated website has an excellent search tool that allows you to enter your criteria and browse a collection of plates that meet (or nearly meet) your search terms. The result would be a combination of current style number plates – two letters followed by two numbers, then another three letters, and 'prefix plates' – which were issued prior to 2001, when the current system was introduced. Prefix plates consist of one letter; one, two or three digits followed by three more letters at the end. One way to potentially save big is through the DVLA's number-plate auctions, which are held periodically. These are either physical auction - where you can bid in person, online or over the phone - or timed auctions. Timed auctions are similar to normal online auction sites, where you place a highest bid that others cannot see, and then the system bids up to this maximum amount on your behalf.
Buying from a broker - There are many companies out there that buy and sell personalized number plates. If you can't find that plate on DVLA website, after that you are searching for brokers websites. Number plates sold directly by DVLA are more expensive than those sold through brokers. If you're after a specific number plate that you know, but can't find it through a broker or DVLA, it may be worth keeping an eye on classified ads in car magazines and newspaper motoring supplements. Number plates that appear in classified ads are rare, and they are often priced to reflect this.
How do I transfer personal number plates?
If you realize having the right plate, but you want to keep it without losing, that's no problem – the DVLA will help to transfer it for a reasonable fee. If you don't have a new car yet to move the plates, you're allowed to keep the plate until you're ready to register it in a new vehicle, so there's no rush.
To complete the plate transfer, you will need your car's registration document known as V25 and however the transfer process can be completed online.
