    Psilocybin mushroom have been part of religious rituals for thousands of years. The Aztecs of Mexico called the mushroom teonanácatl, or “the flesh of God,” in honor of its sacred power.     If successful, a new wave of research could continue to alter the reputation of psilocybin after decades of ban. Carhart-Harris believes that medicine provides a better and more complete treatment than current antidepressants, and that it could be a powerful new treatment for some mental illnesses, including anxiety and eating disorders. A Johns Hopkins University 2016 study of 51 patients with life-threatening cancer showed high doses of psilocybin that significantly reduced end-of-life depression and anxiety for six months in 80% of cases, and helped patients accept death.

Current trials have focused on the potential for psilocybin to reduce smoking addiction and alcohol dependence, after the first pilots experienced dramatic results.     Carhart-Harris thinks part of the reason the drug has been so effective in treating depression until now is that it can help people see their lives more clearly.
