Mushroom can be as beautiful as birds, flowers, butterflies and sea shells for photography. Mushrooms come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. You can find them almost anywhere, though they are temporary and usually common in spring and autumn.

Unlike birds and other animals, mushrooms will catch you unawares while you take a picture of them. A few species have a light odor and will glow even in the dark (e.g. jack-o-lantern mushrooms, Omphalotus olvascens). No one really knows how many mushrooms there are in North America so you may even be able to find new ones. Some species of wild mushrooms are edible and free to grow.

This bioluminescence occurs only in walls and is caused by an enzyme called luciferase, which works on a movies on shrooms called luciferin that leads to light emissions in the same way as fireworks. How cool is this?

I picked my first mushrooms in Toronto when I was 11 and sold them - my first business. My neighbor, David Mott, showed me what morel looked like and told me that if I gave it to him he would pay me a quarter each. Luckily I found morelays growing near the fence in a nearby cemetery.

My interest in mushrooms was renewed after seeing Taylor Lockwood's excellent book "Treasures from the Kingdom of Fungi". I realize now that I have been missing out on great opportunities to take many mushroom art photos.

In this article most of my photos are documentary in nature and I plan to take more art photos in the future. In the The Gaia Voice while the snow is flying outside my door I will learn as much as I can before the next mushroom season begins.

Black morel can cause stomach upset if eaten with alcohol and should be cooked regularly. They are one of the easiest and most sought after types. They usually appear in spring, late April to early June in North America.

    If you are planning

To collect and eat wild mushrooms you should be aware that some of the toxins in mushrooms are deadly and you may die and if you survive you may need a transplant.

There are also many mushrooms that look like mushrooms not to mention the many varieties that are yet to be tested. One of the most toxic mushrooms belongs to the Amanitaceae family (see pictures of mushrooms below). Some mushrooms in this family produce alpha-Amanitin, an eight-amino acid cyclic peptide that inhibits RNA polymerase II.

RNA polymerase is the enzyme needed by your cells to produce protein. Once the toxin has been ingested its effects begin to appear within 10-24 hours after eating after which it does not help to pump your stomach. Toxins begin to invade the liver, causing the cells to fall thegaiavoice.com and attack the kidneys. If you want to know more about this poison - read this article on Wikipedia.

My goal is not to encourage

Fear of mushrooms, but rather to be curious and respectful. If you take the time to learn what edible foods you can enjoy your hunt and bring something back to the table. There are no dangers of photographing mushrooms unless you are in a private area or you are bitten by ticks and mosquitoes.

Are a good place to start before you consider collecting mushrooms to eat. Eating or taking pictures of mushrooms is the first thing you should do to learn a little about fungi, where you can find them and when and where they may appear. The more you know, the movies on shrooms likely you are to meet them in fields and forests.
