Did you get an awesome new phone from Metro PCS? One of the best things about Metro PCS is how easy it is to keep your number when you switch over from another carrier. All you have to do is make sure that your number has been ported in, and then you can start making calls with your new phone! Top my Cell guide will go over what that process looks like and what you need to do when switching to Metro PCS.  Here, learn how to transfer your contacts and pictures and change your plan to get the most out of your new phone!

Why you should consider changing your number

We all have a few friends and family members who don’t know when to stop texting. If you try to avoid constant texts from an overzealous friend or relative, it might be time for a phone number switch. Maybe you’re annoyed that your boss is always texting about company matters, or maybe your ex won’t take no for an answer; whatever it is, there are numerous reasons why you might want to consider changing your phone number.

    What you need

It would be best if you had your old phone, a new Metro PCS phone, and a form of identification. If you’re switching from another carrier or looking to add a line of service, you can use a passport, military ID, school ID, or similar. If you’re activating service for yourself and haven’t used Metro before (for example, if you recently had it on another line), they may ask for additional documents like proof of address or other utility bills.

How to go about changing it

Before we get into how to change your number, let’s talk about why you might want to in the first place. One of those reasons is privacy—if you’re changing phone carriers or switching phones and don’t want anyone (including friends and family) on your current carrier to be able to contact you at all. This can be especially important if you don’t have a good relationship with someone on your cell service provider; it could save you some trouble down the road. However, there are also good business reasons for wanting a private line.

Other benefits of having a new phone number

A new phone number can do more than keep unwanted callers at bay. Changing your cell phone number can also help you shake off any bad luck associated with an old one, or maybe you want a fresh start. Maybe it’s time for a spiritual cleanse, or maybe you want someone else’s baggage on another line. Whatever led you here, we’re glad you made it. Now, follow these steps and enjoy a fresh start.

The disadvantages of having a new phone number

When you switch from one phone company to another, it can take a while for all of your information and preferences to migrate. Don’t be surprised if you lose any contacts or calendar events in the process; often, it’s easier just to set up new ones than try to recover old ones. If you are like me and store all of your music on iTunes, iCloud, or some other online service, you may lose that data when switching phones unless you back up what’s on your old phone (which is easy) before making a change. That can be a hassle—and keep in mind that anything non-Apple will likely have even fewer options for backup, especially if switching from an Android device.

    How much does it cost?

Changing your phone number on a postpaid account will cost you $20. Postpaid accounts are accounts in which you pay for services at regular intervals instead of prepaid plans in which you pay all charges in advance.
