BUENOS AIRES Steve Largent Vapor Untouchable Jersey , May 11 (Xinhua) -- The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) saw steady growth in market and brand value in Argentina, just two years after entering the South American market.

"The ICBC is a young brand in Argentina," said Christian Blousson, the bank's communications manager. "Nevertheless, in our brand 'trackings' we noted that, in terms of recall, it succeeded in completely displacing Standard Bank, obtaining mentions from both clients and non-clients," told Xinhua recently.

In August 2011, the ICBC, one of China's biggest state-owned commercial banks, bought an 80 percent stake in Standard Bank Argentina.

Blousson said "the ICBC has emerged as a brand with sustained growth, leveraged by its value proposition and investment in communication."

Following the final approval of the transaction from the Central Bank of Argentina in November 2012, the ICBC became the majority stakeholder in Standard Bank Argentina.

The move has allowed ICBC Argentina to position itself at a different level, said Blousson.

That is "the new promise of the ICBC brand ... that it builds lasting ties with people and companies, because it provides them with all the tools and experience to strengthen their present and connect with the future," he said.

"We design the communication strategy to be 100 percent aligned with the objectives of the business," he added.

ICBC also sponsors Argentina's national football team, ranked second by FIFA, and the Argentine Rugby Union team, which ranks eighth globally and first in the Americas.

"All of our sponsorship agreements contribute to different degrees to our brand recall and affinity," said Blousson.

KIEV, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- An explosion killed three people and injured 10 others during a march in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Sunday afternoon, the Interfax news agency reported.

The explosion was caused by an explosive device thrown from a passing car into the crowd marching in procession to mark the first anniversary of the regime change.

Kharkiv regional police chief Anatoly Dmitriyev voiced his suspicion that the explosion was a "terrorist attack".

A team of investigators were working at the scene.

BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Facial recognition is becoming increasingly common in China, where it has been installed at ATM machines and KFC restaurants. Now the technology has arrived in university classrooms to track student attendance.

Shen Hao, a professor with Communication University of China, is using facial recognition in his six courses to keep track of the attendance of more than 300 students.

Before every class, Shen activates a new attendance system installed on his tablet computer. Students stand in front of the screen one by one to have their photos taken and matched with those in the school's database.

The system is based on facial recognition technology from Chinese Internet giant Baidu's open AI platform.

Currently, the platform has offered more than 80 different technological services to the public, helping program developers like Shen to develop their own applications.

"The traditional way of tracking attendance is through a roll call. The new system saves time and reduces the workload of teachers," said Shen.

Students have joked that facial recognition is harsh as it doesn't allow for skipping classes. "But they support the technology to enter colleges," said Cui Yuqin, a student majoring in data journalism with the university.

China's Forward-looking Industry Institute said that the facial recognition market in China surpassed 1 billion yuan (about 150 million U.S. dollars) in 2016 and is expected to hit 5.1 billion yuan by 2021.

Facial recognition technology has already been put to creative use. Beijing's Temple of Heaven has used it in toilets to deter toilet paper theft. In east China's Jinan, traffic police installed facial scanners at intersections to catch and shame jaywalkers, and a Beijing university has used the technology to guard its dorms.

TUNIS, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- The President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, on Monday said the European Union (EU) will help Tunisia deal with multiple challenges it faces.

Tajani made the remarks when addressing the deputies of Tunisian parliament. The European Parliament chief is on a two-day official visit to Tunisia, starting from Monday.

Tajani said "the stability of Europe would depend, in some ways, on the stability of Africa and the Mediterranean, including Tunisia, with which cooperation, including security, must be strengthened."

The fight against terrorism, illegal migration and unemployment remain among the concerns shared between Tunisia and the EU, the European Parliament chief said.

Tunisia "contributes remarkably in the development of relations between Europe and Africa. We will be, therefore, alongside Tunisians to the crowning of their economic and social model," the European Parliament chief said.

For his part, the President of Tunisian parliament, Mohamed Ennaceur, said taking up all the challenges Tunisia faces will only be possible in the condition of a fruitful cooperation and partnership in full respect of common interests.

Ennaceur also said Tunisia hopes to see Europe opens markets to Tunisian products.
