    In late 1943, Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, the head of the Manhattan Project developing the atomic bomb, ordered a group of scientists to interview captured Nazi researchers in Europe and find out if they were close to developing a nuclear weapon of their own. Old was one of them. By March 1944, he was back home and the conclusion was the Nazis weren't close.
