Baseball season has really and truly begun (except for the Yankees and Astros, who open on Tuesday night)! Mike Trout or Andrelton Simmons? Jack Smith (@PaperboyJack) I think Trout is going to have a more exciting season because he does pretty much everything on a baseball field at a near-superhuman level, but be careful not to underrate Simmons potential at the plate. Although his .248/.296/.396 line last year was pretty uninspiring, he did hit 17 home runs, and hes only 24 years old. Granted, Trout is 22, but Simmons, like a normal person, has room to improve as he gains more experience. Maybe Trout does, too, in which case, look out everyone. Either way, Simmons isnt catching up to Trout in the hitting department, but thats not entirely the Trea Turner Jersey point here.When it comes to SportsCenter highlight packages, Simmons should have an advantage for two reasons.One is our old friend, East Coast Bias, which is constantly becoming le s and le Alex Wood Jersey s of a real thing in most media, because journalists everywhere now have acce s to live-streaming of games from everywhere, though some bias always will exist due to the simple fact that there are more media members on the East Coast and were generally attending East Coast games in a league with an unbalanced schedule that means East Coast teams feature in more of those games. Anyway, one place where East Coast Bias always will exist is on highlight shows that begin at 11 p.m. Eastern. For Trout to get into SportsCenters top 10, he has to either make an amazing play in the early innings of his game, or hope that he does something that knocks out another play when SportsCenters later edition rolls around. I cant honestly say how much of that kind of editing is done.The other reason to favor Simmons for SportsCenter consideration is the balance of skill sets. As an outfielder, Trout will get fewer chances to make outstanding plays in the first place, and then when you factor in that Simmons is so good defensively, hes going to be more apt to flash leather in highlight-reel fashion. Furthermore, as an infielder, there is a wider variety of great plays for Simmons to make diving to snare a ground ball, leaping to catch a line drive, sprinting into the outfield to stop a blooper from dropping in than there are for Trout, whose defensive gems would primarily be robbing home runs a few times a year, plus a couple of throws. Yes, Trout also will make the highlights for monster home runs, but Simmons simply has more chances to get himself on SportsCenter.
