The people that work in this profession are part of a team that is called a drill crew. When going to work on a platform there are a few general positions open for unskilled to skilled people alike. In the area of maintenance and supply, the tool pusher is the go to person for this area. They also act as the lead in the drilling department. Because they are required to maintain operations and provide the equipment, they work closely with the company man to make sure everything is completed on time.

 

The company man is the one person on the platform that works for the corporation who owns the equipment. This person is in charge of drilling, rig operations and maintenance within the operation. The maintenance portion is handled by the tool pusher who works in conjunction with the company man to gain approval for tools and other important items.

 

The general labor functions are performed by workers known as roustabouts. The word roustabout generated in the early 1900s and referred to carnival workers who performed the general unskilled labor for the camp.
