Durban at first tied down the option to have the games, as they were the sole bidder for the occasion. The games were set to open on 18 July 2022, agreeing with the birthday of the late South African President, Nelson Mandela. It was accounted  Commonwealth Games for in February 2017 that Durban may not be able to have the games because of monetary limitations.
