  Nowadays, most sailboats are fiberglass these days, but if you want a really strong sailboat, you will probably go with steel or aluminum. Fiberglass is acceptable for everyday use, but metal is ideal if you plan to cross oceans or give your yacht a tough life. They make excellent building materials if you wish to have a sailboat of your own design made.

  The best materials are metals like aluminum or steel since they are rigid, strong, and bend under extreme pressure. Fiberglass and even the most sophisticated composites will crack and even shatter. The sailboat will then probably capsize. A sailboat's hull dent doesn't stop it from sailing.
