Hello,
The drive up from Denver is about 2 hours, depending on traffic and weather. There is no need for a car in Vail so I feel it's easier to let a professional do the driving and you can enjoy the scenery. The roads are safe, I-70 is a major interstate, it does have curves, but not like a twisty rural mountain road.
