The GPA score is not the only thing that college admissions look at. They look at the person as a whole and they are definitely seeking out exceptionally gifted students in specific areas. If you pair up some really great extracurricular achievements in addition to a high ACT/SAT score, the admissions committee might give you the benefit of the doubt if your low gpa but high sat.
