  Building for function beats aesthetics until post-Moon Lord. Your base needs: NPC storage (minimum 3x10 rooms with table/chair/torch), crafting hub (anvil, furnace, hellforge, tinkerer, piggy bank, safe), and arena access (teleporter or quick travel). Build your crafting hub underground near spawn—falling enemies can't reach you, and you can add traps for invasions. Use platforms for floors; they let light through and prevent mob spawns inside. Actuators on background walls let you hide wiring and create secret rooms. My base is a 5-story tower with the bottom floor as a trap-filled invasion farm, middle floors for NPCs, and top floor as a skybridge-connected arena. First major upgrade: Reaver Shark from Ocean fishing (40% pickaxe power, mines Hellstone pre-Hardmode) or Vilethorn from Corruption orbs (pierces, wrecks early bosses). Minishark (35 gold from Arms Dealer) is the best pre-Hardmode ranged weapon—pair with Meteor Shot for piercing. Space Gun with Meteor Armor (0 mana cost) is mage meta until Hardmode. Bee Gun from Queen Bee is summoner starter. Don't waste time on the Fiery Greatsword—it's slow and outclassed by Night's Edge (craftable).
